Shaw-waw-nas-see Outdoor Learning And Recreation (SOLAR) Center, at Camp Shaw, provides the opportunity for units to practice First Aid Skills, Lashing and Pioneer projects, Camping Skills, Fire Building and Outdoor Cooking.

Our 160 plus acres consist of a mixed forest, grasslands and some of the most varied areas of Rock Creek. Rock Creek begins as a slow moving, sandy bottomed creek that turns into a quickly moving, limestone caverned creek rushing its way to the Kankakee River. Camp Shaw has the distinction of having one of every type of conifer that grows naturally in IL planted on our campus. We are currently working on a prairie restoration project to help visitors better understand the beauty of the prairie during the time of the Potawatomi.

We have an in-ground pool, open from June to September, Archery Range and over 8 miles of trails which easily access the Kankakee State Park trail system. Trails range from easy to strenuous and offer hiking opportunities for every ability. Points of interest include small waterfalls, fossil beds, rare plants, limestone cliffs and the gravesite of
Potawatomi Chief Shaw-waw-nas-see.

We offer a 20’ climbing wall, low ropes course and a zip line over Rock Creek.  We have a butterfly garden, a small working farm and offer horse back riding and lessons.
