The staff at Camp Shaw is divided into Program Staff and Counseling Staff.
The Program Staff includes the Assistant Directors, CIT Director, Health Director, Kitchen Assistants, and the Program Area Directors. These staff members focus on planning the camp program, supervising the different program areas, and assisting the Counseling staff in camper issues. Program Staff members live in their own staff cabins and are generally at camp the entire summer.
The Camp Health Director is an individual whose only job is to help campers with health-related issues. The Health Director is on-call 24 hours a day during camp sessions.
The Counseling Staff consists of all the cabin counselors. These are the staff that live in the cabins with the kids. These staff members' main focus is supervising and ensuring a positive camping experience for all campers. Their secondary focus is to assist the program staff in the camp program as needed. Counselors are assigned to program areas to assist during "Camptivities."
The Counseling staff is assisted by Volunteer Counselors who are asked to come on an as-needed, week-by-week basis. These Counselors also live in cabins with the campers. Volunteer Counselors are often previous staff members or previous campers who have completed the CIT program and have been recommended by the CIT director.
Staff Training
For two weeks before the first camp session each year, Camp Shaw conducts staff training. During these training weeks, the entire camp program for the summer is decided, and camp staff is trained on many different aspects of the summer camp environment.
Staff is trained on handling most camper issues that can arise over the summer.
CPR/AED & FIRST AID: Most of the camp staff are trained annually in these areas. Our onsite AED and other emergency equipment are inspected annually.
HOMESICKNESS: A common problem among campers who are experiencing overnight camp for the first time, Staff is trained on techniques of how to help campers overcome these feelings and get involved in the activities.
DIVERSITY: Staff is taught the importance of recognizing diversity of different types (Age, Race, Class, Background, etc) and how to apply that knowledge to programming in an overnight camp environment.
BULLYING: Another common problem in group environments, staff is trained to recognize different types of bullying, how to recognize behaviors of a bullied child, and how to resolve the conflict quickly.
EMERGENCIES: Camp Shaw conducts scenario trainings on procedures for emergencies that can occur in different areas of the camp (Pool, Creek, Cabins, BLITZ Course, etc). Each program staff member has a Radio on at all times. This is the main line of communication for all incidents. |
